A professor entered his class with a glass of water. He raised the glass of water. Everyone in the room expected a: half entry or half full” question. Instead, to everyone’s surprise, the professor smiled and asked: “How heavy is this glass of water?”.
“I have to weigh it to know how much it weighs. But the question, I want you to answer – what if I raise the glass for a minute?”, asked the professor.
“Nothing” the students answered unanimously.
“But what if I hold it for an hour?”, asked the professor.
“Your arms will start to hurt”, replied one of the students.
“You’re right! but what if I hold it for the whole day?”, asked the professor.
“Your hands will go numb, your muscles will be tense,” said another student.
“You’re right!” said the professor. “So what should I do to avoid the pain?”, asked the professor.
“Put down the glass”, replied one student.
“Exactly!” said the professor. He continued, “The weight of the glass remains the same in all respects. But, the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes. Stress and worries in life are like a glass of water. If I think for a while, nothing will happen. Think about them for a long time, they will start to feel pain. Think about them too long, you will feel stressed.”
It is important to think about the problems that come in life. But, you should not carry the stress for so long that it starts making your life painful and paralyzed. It is important to let go of your stressors. Don’t stress yourself out all day.
“Always remember to put down the glass before going to bed!”
